Yo La Tengo is one of the most beloved and respected bands in America. For nearly thirty years, Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew have enjoyed success entirely on their own terms -- playing the world's best concert halls, museums, and dives, dominating critics' lists, doing a Simpsons theme, playing the Velvet Underground in "I Shot Andy Warhol," sharing stages with some of the most important musicians of our time, and even creating a holiday tradition onto themselves with their yearly series of Hanukkah shows at Hoboken, New Jersey's legendary club Maxwells, from which they've donated hundreds of thousands to charity.

Partnerships born out of a Craig’s List ad rarely end well, and being dubbed the “best band in Los Angeles” by Perez Hilton can be a dubious distinction—unless you’re talking about Capital Cities. Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian, the front men behind the breakout pop-rock group are a success story spawned by the Internet that’s continued to blossom. The Los Angeles-based act, which boasts a five-piece live set, took both the blogosphere and the shores of California by storm with 2011’s debut, self-titled EP, and haven’t looked back since. This year’s Kangaroo Court was a worthy follow up, and has erased any doubt that Capital Cities is a one hit wonder. Their electronic-infused pop rock represents all that is right in modern music making, and makes the perfect soundscape for a day at the beach, as long as you’re ready to dance.

Salon Saturdays are a regular, monthly, open-house style concert event that embraces community and culture through music. Students, teachers, and guest artists provide a lively soundtrack while guests socialize over food and art. Modeled after the European Salons of the 18th-19th centuries, we gather together in our "house" at the Denver World Music Studio for a night of community music and art.
This month's featured teacher/guest artists are Loribeth T. Gregory (violin/fiddle), Shawn Mollenhauer (piano), and Neil Haverstick (guitar, banjo, oud).

Citing influences such as the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths, the Arctic Monkeys create a vibrant punk-inspired sound well suited for Britpop and alternative rock fans alike. Alex Turner (vocals/guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed the Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield, England, in 2003.
The Arctic Monkeys' good fortune continued when that fall they were named the recipients of the 2006 Mercury Prize, the prize money from which they donated to an undisclosed charity. That same year, the guys also nabbed Best British Breakthrough Act at the Brit Awards and Best New Band and Best British Band at the NME Awards. (NME also made the bold assertion that the band's debut was one of the Top Five British albums ever released.) Weathering through the hype, the Arctic Monkeys kept working and their sophomore album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, surfaced in April 2007.

Hailed as grunge innovators, Soundgarden redefined rock music for a generation. In the 80s and 90s, the band’s mesmerising soundscapes and compelling lyrics seduced audiences hungry for originality. It was a sound rooted deeply within the wild landscape of the Pacific North West – an atmosphere which still resonates strongly for Cornell. “The band is dripping with it”, he says. “that indescribable longing. It’s not about the society, it’s not about the people, it’s not about the city. It’s some other thing.”

Not all rock was created equal; The Orchestra is living proof. With a pedigree reaching into the ‘70s and ‘80s as the Electric Light Orchestra and into the ‘90s as ELO Part II, The Orchestra has launched their 2013 tour, heralding a continuing era of unparalleled symphonic rock. Six members of The Orchestra were part of ELO Part II, with two members--Mik Kaminski (the famous “Blue Violin”) and keyboardist Louis Clark--dating back to the original formation of the Electric Light Orchestra in the 1970s. ELO and ELO Part II, and now The Orchestra, are known as the all-time masters of symphonic rock, with the use of strings, synthesizers, and exquisitely layered vocals. For many people, the “ELO sound” is as close as they will ever get to classical music.

In what is obviously a "dream" pairing, or some might say a "nightmare," Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson will be teaming up for the "Masters of Madness" tour June 1 through 28. Following recent pairings of Alice with Rob Zombie and then Rob Zombie with Manson, this combination of Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson has been long-awaited by fans of both artists. Alice Cooper is a true rock icon, having pioneered the use of theatrics and shocking images onstage in concerts from the earliest days of the original band of the same name. Since going solo, he has continued to produce elaborate stage shows providing fans with both shock and rock of the highest caliber. Inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2011, Alice has toured and recorded continuously, with his most recent album being Welcome 2 My Nightmare through UMe. Recorded with longtime collaborator Bob Ezrin, who produced the original ground breaking, multi-platinum Welcome To My Nightmare album in 1975, the album picks up right where they left off, with Alice trapped in his own warped mind. Alice's catalog of hits and anthems, including "I'm Eighteen," "No More Mr Nice Guy," School's Out," "Elected," "Poison," and others, are included in his current "Raise The Dead" show, which also features his musical tribute to his fallen friends John Lennon, Keith Moon, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. Currently, Alice's touring band features the three guitar attack of Orianthi, Tommy Henriksen and Ryan Roxie, backed by bassist Chuck Garric and drummer Glen Sobel. Additionally, "Nights With Alice Cooper," Alice’s nightly radio show, is available in nearly 100 cities in the USA, Canada, Australia, and the UK. The show features his favorite classic rock songs along with his insider anecdotes about many of the artists. Marilyn Manson’s most recent full-length album Born Villain, his eighth overall, debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart.
